A dilapidated stone barn in Lower Slaughter

Cotswold Architects was approached by a builder to explore the conversion of Tuppenny Barn, a distinctive but dilapidated stone barn in Lower Slaughter.

Designing around the slope

Tuppenny Barn is built on sloping ground. The barn featured substantial changes in floor level and a roofline that followed the contours of the site. These unusual characteristics became central to the barn conversion design.

Converting the barn while keeping its character

We developed a sensitive scheme to renovate, remodel and convert Tuppenny Barn into a modern home. The scheme retains the building’s historic features, character and sense of openness.

The stone walls and stone-slate roofs are kept, with full-height glazed doors set within oak frames along the wings. Stone terraces step down with the ground in front of the barn.

A new purpose for an agricultural building

The completed Cotswold stone barn conversion demonstrates how thoughtful residential architecture can give an agricultural building a new purpose while preserving the qualities that make it special.
